This month I was reunited with an old musical companion. Smooth dark wood, 1970s look, smart black and white keys, squeaky foot pedals that the most persistent piano tuners have not yet found a way to silence in the long term. My piano currently lives in a friend’s studio, and in 18 months I just hadn’t felt the inclination to visit.

I acquired the piano back in the late 1990s when I played fairly often – frequently enough to keep some familiar pieces under the fingers and to attempt some new ones. It was not one of my most practical purchases…
