A reflection on archives & the creative process
‘Mind if I look?’
Nick Darke’s unpublished comedy sketch begins with an artist at work, easel and canvas set up facing the sea. He is interrupted by a ‘bloke’ who asks about his work. At first, the bloke seems fascinated by the creative process, but his questions and suggestions become more and more intrusive. The scene culminates in the bloke drawing on the artist’s work and then running away to destroy the now-damaged painting.
Darke’s script was performed for the first time recently at Falmouth University’s AMATA, in a set of rehearsed readings of material from the Nick Darke collection in the University’s Archives & Special Collections…
